KNOWING Expandable Impact Interaction Model Framework

KNOWING Expandable Impact Interaction Model Framework

The KNOWING SD Framework is a central, open-source System Dynamics (SD) model that links to a set of high-resolution domain models covering transport, energy demand and supply, microclimate, health, land use, and flooding. This hybrid approach combines the system-wide view of SD models — feedback loops, time delays, cross-sectoral effects — with the precision of detailed sectoral simulations, making it possible to trace both direct and indirect impacts of climate change and of adaptation/mitigation measures.

KNOWING‘s Modelling Framework was built through an iterative calibration process: SD sub-models are calibrated stepwise against domain-model outputs and then combined into coherent configurations for each of KNOWING‘s three Climate Impact Contexts — Heatwave & Health, Flooding & Infrastructure, and Soil Fertility & Agriculture. Demonstrator-specific pathways combining mitigation and adaptation interventions were defined and tested for Tallinn, Granollers, Naples, and South Westphalia.

SD Model and Sub-Models

The parent model and each calibrated sub-model are published as Vensim models (with required input data files), archived on Zenodo under FAIR and open-science principles. Each entry below is a persistent concept DOI that always resolves to the latest version.

Parent model (overall pathway): 10.5281/zenodo.18420699

Transport: 10.5281/zenodo.18420489

Energy Demand: 10.5281/zenodo.18421578

Energy Supply: 10.5281/zenodo.18421633

Microclimate: 10.5281/zenodo.18420254

Flooding: 10.5281/zenodo.18419876 (Simile model; run instructions differ from the Vensim models)

Land Use: 10.5281/zenodo.18412628

Behaviour: 10.5281/zenodo.18421708

Health: not yet published — insufficient calibration signal from domain-model outputs to date; may be released at a later stage.

Running the Models

The Vensim models require Vensim DSS or Professional (subscripts are not supported in PLE/PLE Plus); a free Vensim Model Reader allows read-only simulation for users without a commercial licence. All files needed for running each model are included in its Zenodo archive. Only the Flooding sub-model runs in Simile (v7.2+) instead.

Model files are plain text and can also be manually re-implemented in other SD environments such as AnyLogic, Stella Architect, or Insight Maker.
