The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences has a reputation for excellence in research in its four major themes of Environmental Health Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Geography and Human Geography. The latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) results rank research at the University of Birmingham as 3rd in the UK for ‘Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences’.

Our Role in KNOWING

The University of Birmingham is leading the Work Package 1 of the KNOWING project. The work centres around the identification of climate influences and interrelations, particularly how climate risks cascade through our economic and social systems and how adaptation and mitigation measures can be used in combination to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The tasks that we lead centre on the collation and review of evidence on the current understanding of how risks, adaptation measures and mitigation measures interrelate for the Climate Impacts Contexts studied by KNOWING (“impacts of heat waves on human health”, “the impacts of river and coastal floods on infrastructure” and “impacts of soil fertility on agriculture”) and well as the demonstrator regions. Our work has both implications for, and interactions with, all of the target groups identified by KNOWING, but will have a particular focus on ‘industry and economy’.
